Program Features

Semi Private Classes

  • Weekly Friday semi private classes in person for both karate and kobudo. Small class sizes facilitate ample hands on mentorship and instruction in the ways of the martial arts for each student.

Students stratified by age into one of:

    • Children’s Karate

    • Youth/Teen Karate

    • Adult Karate

Classes are livestreamed for students who are away or unable to make class. Classes are recorded and saved to a class library for student study and 24/7 access.

Private Lessons

  • Supplement your martial arts training with private lessons, completed at the dojo, or with delivery service to your “home dojo”.

  • If you/your child is accepted into the program, you may select group classes, private classes, or a combination of both per your preference for their training and mentorship. Private classes are available for students who have been approved and are on the waitlist to join the program.

  • Private classes leverage true 1:1 training time for those in pursuit of optimizing their learning process, kata detail work, etc.

  • Ideal as part of grading preparation to promote skill, and foster confidence.

Synchronous & Asynchronous Mentorship

  • Mentorship is at the heart of our program. One’s marital arts journey is not only about the self defense and physical skillset gained, but the process of who you can become in the future with guidance and mentorship on your path to self perfection.

  • Children begin with in person mentorship, which transitions to in person in class and online by appointment for teens and adults on a consult basis.

Synchronous Online Classes

  • Continue your training from your “home dojo” wherever the world finds you by joining the private class live stream each week.

    • Warm-up

    • Basic Techniques (blocks, punches, kicks, strikes, etc.)

    • Kata

    • Self Defense

    • Bunkai (application of the techniques of karate to “real” life fighting situations)

    • Meditation

    • The philosophy, principles, and virtues of the martial arts.

The Benefits of a Martial Arts Education

Self Defense

  • Through training in the martial arts, all students learn practical self defense for life; allowing them to protect themselves with karate techniques. This includes defending against kicks, punches, strikes, grabs, take downs, etc.

  • The values of self defense teach the student that they are responsible to stand up for themselves when their safety or wellbeing is at risk, that it is not okay to be taken advantage of, and of course that they and their body and life are worth protecting!

Focus, Attention, & Listening

  • In our modern world, full of digital devices and distractions, the ability to pay attention to our surroundings, listen - not just hear, and the capacity to stay focused on a task, big or small are becoming ever more challenging.

  • The “superpower” of generation Z will be the few who can eliminate or modulate these stimuli accordingly in pursuit of the future they want to achieve.

  • With training in the martial arts, we improve our capacity to provide meaningful effort in pursuit of all these efforts — enhancing one’s life in the short, medium, and long term!

Self Discipline, Goal Setting, & Ambition

  • Training in the martial arts, working towards promotion to the next belt, and goal setting broadly are expressly useful tools to foster the virtues of goal setting, ambition and self discipline. By having a student work towards a grading (a promotional test for their next rank) starts a cycle of hard work, practice, and consistency in pursuit of a deferred potentially positive outcome. This reinforces the concept that not only is the effort in and of itself meaningful, but that the result only comes as a function of the prerequisite work consummate with getting there.

  • This process promotes a lifetime recurring process of goal setting, effortful action in pursuit of that goal, and ambition to strive towards potential future positive outcomes that will serve the student throughout their life - whether in academics, athletics, personal, or professional development.

  • View a student case study here (coming soon!)

Confidence & Personal Development

  • Self confidence comes from gaining experience in unfamiliar situations, where danger, fear, or self doubt may occur. This can take the form of physical, mental, or other challenges that life throws our way.

  • Through training in the martial arts, students gain experience with being uncomfortable like self defense situations in the controlled dojo environment in pursuit of having those skills and experiences transition into “real life” should they need to defend themselves, or one day defend their thesis as a graduate student at university!

  • View a student case study here (coming soon!)

A Modern Day Moral Education

  • The classical values of honesty, integrity, loyalty, courtesy, respect, and patience have been held high in societies across the world for thousands of years. Training in the martial arts brings these traits to the forefront, where respect for your seniors, compassion for your juniors, doing what you will say you will do, etc. are hallmarks characteristics and results of the participants, irrespective of art.

  • re-instill and reinforce these traits as part of the education of your family or your child, setting them up for a future where they respect others, act with decorum, and act appropriately, remaining calm and collected when others they encounter throughout their life act without.

  • View a student case study on the value of patience and “waiting” to be promoted to the next belt here (coming soon!)

Physical Literacy, Fitness, & Athletic Skillset

  • Through martial arts training, students learn to use their body, moving, coordinating, and the basic biomechanical movements for a healthy active life. Training can help improve not only physical and athletic capacity, but confidence in their ability to move their body for sports, gym class, or anything life throws at them!

  • improvements in health and fitness are of course not only an investment in their short term capacity, but a long run investment in their understanding that health, movement, and exercise are essential for the rest of their life. Training in the martial arts re-enforces this attitude.

Who Our Program is For - Sample Student Pathways

School Aged Boys & Girls

Help educate your son or daughter in preparation for the physical, mental, and life challenges that come with growing up!

Arm them with the self defense skills and confidence to stand independently and face challenges that life will no doubt throw their way, protecting their mind and body, and giving them the resilience to overcome whatever stands in their path.

Helping to raise them with the values of courtesy, discipline, mental toughness, integrity, and so much more - an investment in a martial arts education is a path to long term prosperity when coupled with a strong and supportive upbringing in the home.

Read my story as to how training in the martial arts from childhood has set me up for a life of confidence and success.

Youth & Teenagers

For youth and teens, middle school and high school brings new challenges. On top of their school work, most have extra-curricular commitments and a part time job to manage on top of maintaining their grades. This brings new challenges, new stresses, new social groups, and importantly - all new “life” learning opportunities too.

In our ever changing world, seemingly moving faster each day, many feel like they have less control over their actions, lives, and the “uncontrollables” of life. By training in the martial arts (as another extra curricular commitment!) helps youth and teens understand how to handle some of these physical and mental challenges. Everything from creating strategies to deal with challenging group members in a class project, to how to defend yourself if substance use at a birthday party gets out of hand, to how to comport oneself at work and take responsibility and initiative in pursuit of getting a raise!

Busy Parents & Professionals

For busy parents and adults, the stress and routine of full time employment on top of managing personal and familial responsibilities can be daunting.

On top of that, managing your own health and physical fitness while you juggle work, commutes, family, parents, raising your children etc. is a battle.

Take control of your life by investing in your own training in the martial arts to enhance your physical and mental health. Learn to challenge your body, control your mind, and improve your life.

Many of our adult students trained in the martial arts in their youth/childhood, and had been “longing” to get back into their training after a long hiatus. Read a case study of how the martial arts has helped enhance the life of an adult student here (coming soon!)

Meet the Instructor

Sensei Mike Slomczewski

Godan - Goju Ryu Karate Do

It’s said that martial arts training is like a roller coaster ride, a constant cycle of falling in and out of love with training throughout your life. I am no different. 30 years into my own training, and I’m still battling these ups, downs, ebbs, and flows of motivation and complacency - but each time I battle, I get stronger, knowing that I’ve done this before, and that through the course of my life training in the martial arts, I’ve always found a way to re-fall in love with the martial arts no matter how long or hard the battle.

My Martial Arts Story

I was enrolled in the martial arts as a young boy, my parents seeking to give their son the skills to defend himself in a world that was changing ever more quickly. They may or may not have known about the philosophical or mental elements of martial arts training, and enrolled me in a dojo where my older cousin had already been training. I hear this same story from most parents who enroll their children with me to this day - seeking a practical skillset and confidence that will serve them in their formative years.

Through my childhood in the martial arts, I came to dislike the routine and “monotony” of training every week, what felt like the same routine, the same practice, for “no reason”. (as with nearly everyone) Whether it’s music, language, or any other slowly learned craft where the benefits are reaped in the distant future, I couldn’t see as a boy what was right in front of my face the entire time. I couldn’t appreciate that my training was an investment in my future. At the age of 11 I wanted to quit. To this day I still thank my parents and my Sensei for not giving up on me - refusing to let me have what I wanted (or thought I wanted) in the moment.

It wasn’t until my teenage years that with the guidance and mentorship of my Sensei, that I did fall in love with the martial arts for the first time; inspired by his example of stoic confidence and by witnessing his skill in self defense time and time again when instructing me and my peers. As a child I never loved the martial arts, nor was I ever the most skilled, talented, fastest, strongest, or any other athletic attribute in any of my classes, but my Sensei knew ME - he knew what elements of the training could drive me into the way of the martial arts to reap the long term benefits for my life and personal development. I credit him to this day for leaning into these elements of my personality and disposition to help guide my training and giving me my “1st love” of the way of karate-do.

By leveraging the physicality of the training, my Sensei helped a 12 year old me see a challenge, see something worth conquering; see that I could make myself stronger through training in the martial arts. This led me to be not the strongest, fastest, or most talented in my class, but among the most consistent and disciplined with my practice and independent training routine. That methodology and mindset of slow, consistent, unrelenting commitment continues to serve me to this day in every single outlet I pursue as a professional, an academic, and as an individual.

By the age of 13 I was foregoing a high school job so I could be at the dojo to assist, and train 6 days a week. Through the contact training, the fighting, the strength and conditioning elements of the training, I watched my body, mind, and life change before my eyes. Over the course of 5 years, I watched my skill improve, my lack of athletic skillset become competent, my confidence grow. I watched the benefits extend outside the dojo too - I suddenly became among the strongest in my high school weight training class in pullups, plank, and the bench press, despite never having lifted a weight until the age of 16. I watched my grades at school accelerate as a function of the discipline I had acquired from training in the martial arts. I was training with adults and being seen as a leader in my kata and physical capacity, even sometimes leading those who were older and more experienced than me on their path too. These experiences deepened my obsession and love for the training, and fueled my ambition to test for my black belt at the age of 18.

After my ACL injury in 2006, which has inspired my career in physiotherapy, sports medicine, and exercise science to this day (learn more here), my time training as an adult; as a black belt forced me to see that the skills I had learned during my “1st love” were useful, but imperfect in isolation. I could not train in the same way I always had after my injury. Others were now much physically stronger than me, and I had to adjust the way I moved to suit my “new” post surgical body. This was the start of my first big drop on the roller coaster of motivation and challenge since the age of 11; but thereafter, a “2nd wind” and re-falling in love with the martial arts for a very different reason. I had formed my identity in the martial arts as the person who loved the physical training, but never delved into the philosophical, esoteric, or spiritual elements of the training. Now after my ACL surgery in 2010, I had no choice but to embrace the fact that I was not who I was before, and had to forge this new identity in the non physical elements of the martial arts.

Since that time, I’ve gained a deep respect for the philosophy and mindset of Bushido that formed the basis of my training all those years ago. The ability to stand up for what you believe in, have integrity in what one says and the actions he takes, demonstrating unshakeable discipline, and a commitment to moral conduct are traits that are becoming ever more rare in our changing world. As a tradition, the martial arts is hundreds if not thousands of years old, but the values and virtues the participants are trained in are timeless. The older and more experienced I become, the less my training is physical (although it still continues to be valuable in this respect), and the more it is mental and philosophical

I now derive my fuel from giving back. My training isn’t about “me” anymore, although it continues to add immense value to my life every single day. The discipline gives me the ability to endure things most can’t - what some might see as the “monotony” I’ve come to see as an opportunity to “practice” my martial arts training. If nothing else, that’s what the martial arts has taught me - enduring things others do not volitionally is my “superpower”, and gives me the routine and consistency to achieve in the long run. I am grateful to give back and mentor my own students for the past 8 years, and to give back to professional martial artists in Japan with the gifts I’ve been given as a martial artist myself. I wouldn’t be who I am today without the martial arts, and it will always be an intrinsic part of who I am. I will always continue to walk my path, ride this rollercoaster so to speak, because if I’ve learned anything after 30 years of training, its the journey, the walking of the path itself that’s most meaningful.

Parent & Student Testimonials

  • My teenaged son has been taking karate classes with Summit Performance for over five years, progressing from being a complete beginner white belt to a confident blue belt in karate. He has learned discipline from martial arts training, and has developed strength and stamina. He has developed leadership skills with assisting the other karate classes, gaining experience along the way. He has learned about the importance of continuously pushing himself to be his best each day with the wise words and encouragement of Sensei Mike.

  • "This dojo is truly a gem in our community. My two daughters started training with you when they were 5 years old, and over the years, the dojo has become a very special part of our family’s life. I have seen them grow more confident, focused, respectful, and resilient. What I appreciate most is that you teach much more than techniques. You teach patience, discipline, self-control, perseverance, and respect for others. I have seen my daughters become more willing to try hard things, face challenges, step outside their comfort zones, and believe in themselves. The dojo has always felt like a positive and supportive family. We are truly grateful for your patience, encouragement, and guidance over the years.

    — Parent of Enrolled Student(s)

  • Sensei has been training and mentoring our son for 10 years now. We have watched him grow in to a great young man with confidence in all he does; a calmness to tackle difficult situations and reflect on his emotions; and discipline to keep training outside of the dojo not only in karate but all aspects of his life. Sensei has taught our son that hard work and consistency have results and how to use the skills learned outside of the dojo both physical and mental. Sensei has been a fantastic mentor to our son and we hope he continues his training to achieve his black belt as he enters his high school years
